Death Wish
The Death Wish is a bold, unconventional Western hat inspired by outlaw culture, the darker side of Americana, and the mystique of the Wild West. This one-of-a-kind design brings together sculptural craftsmanship, rugged textures, and symbolic details to create a hat that is as much a work of art as it is a statement piece.
Crafted from Buckskin-colored beaver felt, the hat is intentionally distressed and treated throughout, giving its surface a weathered, timeworn appearance. The wide, flat Western brim features darkened, hand-burned edges that contrast with the lighter felt, adding depth and character to its silhouette.
The defining feature is its hand-shaped skull crown, meticulously sculpted into the felt to create the impression of a skeletal face. Deep contours form the eyes, nose, and mouth, while black X-shaped stitching brings the skull to life with an unmistakable sense of attitude. The result is a haunting yet playful interpretation of traditional Western hat shaping.
Around the base of the crown, a textured python-skin band is layered with leather detailing, introducing a contrast of natural patterns and materials. Playing cards tucked into the band add a subtle nod to gambling, risk, and the unpredictable spirit of the outlaw West.
Finishing the design is a personalized “11:11” branding along the brim, a symbolic reminder to make a wish and a fitting signature for a hat named The Death Wish.
Every contour, burn mark, and distressed detail is intentionally created by hand, ensuring that no two interpretations will ever be exactly alike.

ABOUT X RATINGS
The X system is a traditional method used within hatmaking to distinguish grades of fur felt. Because there is no universal X standard across manufacturers, X ratings should be understood within each maker’s collection. Within the Justin Great collection, higher X ratings represent progressively more premium felt, offering greater refinement, durability, performance, and luxury.

HOW DO I ADJUST MY HAT SIZE?
Adjustable Inner Band Instructions (For our wool hats only)
Flip up the sweatband to find the velcro tab + pull to tighten. Velcro the ribbon back in place to secure your desired fit. The adjustable band can adjust the hat down by up to 5 cm.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
How would you like to wear your flat brim hat?
Traditional:
This is the “traditional” style of wearing a hat.
1. Place your cloth measuring tape around your head over your occipital bone (the furthest part on the back of your head).
2. Bring the measure around to the front of your head. About 5 mm above your ears and position it in the center of your forehead, or just above the eyebrows (depending on where you want your hat to sit). Make sure the tape is sitting comfortably, this is how the hat will sit on your head.
Halo:
1. Place your cloth measuring tape around your head over your occipital bone (the furthest part on the back of your head).
2. Bring the tape measure around to the front of your head. About 5 mm above your ears and position it at the top of your forehead (beginning of hairline). Make sure the tape is sitting comfortably, this is how the hat will sit on your head.
Traditional vs. Halo
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- Spot clean with a damp cloth.
- Brush lightly with lint brush or double-sided tape.
- Use a lint roller or double-sided tape to remove any excess dirt.
- For a softer hat, steam for 30 - 60 seconds. For further information on steaming, see below.
STEAMING INSTRUCTIONS
- Use steam from a apparel steamer, boiling pot of water, or iron (use caution).
- Please do not apply the actual iron to the hat - the steam will be enough to soften the hat so you can mould the brim flat.
- Steam the underside of the brim, flip it, lightly steam the top of the brim and then lay it on a clean, flat surface. Use your hands to push down on the brim and shape the hat to your desired shape. If you want to flatten the brim, press down on the brim or lay heavy flat books that will not transfer color on each side of the brim and let dry on a flat surface.
- All of our wool hats have a stiffening agent applied, to ensure that they maintain their shape. Steaming often reactivates this stiffening agent over time and can breathe new life into your hat.
HOW DO I STORE MY HAT?
- We recommend storing your hat in our hat boxes. This will keep your hat clean and preserve its shape. Store on a flat surface, or hang your hat on a nail/push pin on the wall for a decor forward storage method.
TIPS
- Please avoid prolonged periods of sun exposure to your hat to avoid colour fade and brim damage.
- Please do not get your hat wet. If it does get wet, we recommend towel drying immediately to remove any moisture or leaving in the sunshine to dry. Next follow the steam guide to reshape.
- It is natural to sweat in your hat. Hand washing the inner band is best to ensure your hat isn't submerged in water. Use a brush with minimal detergent to clean and allow to dry in an area with air flow or a fan. Use steam method if your hat mishaps during this process.
